Online service to register wills

MERSEYSIDE solicitor Paul Rooney has launched the UK's first national wills register, with accountant Phil Hall and business advisor Geoffrey Prince.
Thewillplace.com offers a nationwide will registration, location and retrieval service, allowing members of the. public to register the whereabouts of their wills and : enabling probate professionals to search for missing wills.

It has been launched in response to statistics which show that one "in four wills, is either lost or damaged, often leading to expensive legal costs, tax disputes and distress for family members.
The company, based in Hoylake, expects to roll out almost 100 thewillplace.com licences across the UK, establishing a network of postcode-based franchisees to promote its services.

Mr Rooney said: "In 28 years practice, I have encountered many instances when an already stressful time is made worse because the will cannot be found, often despite extensive and potentially costly searches.
"There is sometimes no alternative but to apply for probate as if the deceased had not made a will. This can result in serious financial implications."
